As the 9th of December 2023 brings forth the second day of Hanukkah, a festival of light and resilience, the world is also witnessing the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This stark contrast between the celebration of light and the darkness of war serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of hope and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabean Revolt, a pivotal moment in Jewish history when a small band of Jewish warriors fought against the oppressive Seleucid Empire to reclaim their religious freedom and the right to practice their faith. Despite being vastly outnumbered and resourced, the Maccabees emerged victorious, illuminating the Temple in Jerusalem and rekindling the Jewish spirit.
Today, as the conflict in Gaza rages on, the spirit of Hanukkah resonates with even greater significance. The Jewish people, once again, face challenges and uncertainty, yet they remain steadfast in their faith and their commitment to peace and justice. The lights of Hanukkah serve as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path towards a brighter future.
While the conflict in Gaza casts a shadow over the joyous festivities, it also underscores the power of unity and compassion. Amidst the violence and destruction, acts of kindness and understanding continue to emerge, reminding us of the inherent goodness that exists within humanity.
This Hanukkah, let us draw strength from the resilience of the Jewish people and the unwavering belief in a brighter future. Let the lights of our menorahs illuminate not only our homes but also our hearts, fostering empathy, understanding, and a commitment to peace.
May the spirit of Hanukkah inspire us to overcome division and embrace the values of harmony and compassion. May we strive to bring an end to conflict and create a world where the light of peace and justice shines brightly for all.
Happy Hanukkah!

Thank you very much, David. It took a lot of time finding the right words. It didn’t feel right to not give attention to the current situation. Anyhow, chag sameach!
